Netbooks

So the cute Circuit City salesman convinced you that the seventeen inch wide screen display was the one to buy when you were laptop shopping — afterall, two more inches is two more inches. But when you got it home, you realized just how big that thing was, and heavy too. Not to mention it wouldn’t come close to fitting into that nice coach bag you just bought. Now your salesman is out of a job, and you’re stuck with a clunky computer that pulls you over to one side when you carry it under your arm. What’s a queen to do?

Enter the Netbook. If all you want to do is surf the net a little bit (gotta update that Facebook status), check your email, watch an occasional Youtube video, or write a love letter, then this little, lightweight computer might be just what you’re looking for. The screen is ten inches on the diagnal, which should be enough to satisfy most of you honeys, and the weight is about three pounds. What’s even better, no more cat fights over who gets to sit next to the power outlet at Starbucks. Most netbooks have over five hours of battery life — enough to last you through half a dozen vinte, skinny, half caff, vanilla  lattes.

And if you hate Microsoft Vista and long for the days of Windows XP again, most netbooks ship with XP because it’s faster than Vista. And for the adventurous gay geek, you can dual boot a lightweight linux distro (if you don’t understand what I just said, don’t sweat it).

So, which one do you get? Well, GCM recommends the ASUS  Eee PC model EPC1000HE. It has a nice webcam (for whatever you might be using that for), bluetooth connectivity, long battery life and is an all around nice machine.

If you want to get this from Best Buy, please be aware that you may not be getting the exact same model. Sometimes, Best Buy gets manufacturers to create stripped down versions of products. For example, this netbook comes in a version that doesn’t have Bluetooth if purchased from Best Buy.

UPDATE: ASUS has updated to a new model: The  ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005HA-PU1X-BU. We recommend this unit because of it’s improved battery life and other features.
